Buzz Williams and his coaching staff hit it big on the recruiting trail Friday night when 2013 small forward Deonte Burton committed to the Golden Eagles.
The 6-foot-4 Burton, a Milwaukee native, currently plays his high school ball at Brewster Academy (New Hampshire) and had an offer from Illinois.
The commitment comes just two days after Burton took an unofficial visit on campus. Three weeks ago, Wisconsin Sports Network’s Mark Miller suspected that a 2013 commitment could be coming shortly.
Burton was that player.
“Marquette is in Milwaukee and Milwaukee is home for me,” Burton told Miller. “Milwaukee also needs a change in the sense of having somebody to look up to. Being from Milwaukee and playing at Marquette, I hope I can be that kind of person for the young players in the city.”
Ranked as high as No. 26 on recruit sites, Burton is a consensus top-50 recruit and Williams’ first commitment for tor 2013. The Golden Eagles now have one remaining scholarship for the 2013 class. Burton will not be allowed to sign his national letter of intent until November 2012.
The powerful lefty excels at slashing to the basket and uses his size in traffic to create space.
