The Steve Wojciechowski era officially began Monday evening when Marquette announced the hiring of Chris Carrawell as an assistant coach.
Carrawell spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach with the Springfield Armor, the Brooklyn Nets’ D-League affiliate. Prior to that stint, he worked as the assistant video coordinator/assistant strength and conditioning coach at Duke in 2011. He was a graduate assistant/head team manger from 2008-2010 after being hired in 2007-08 as the athletics outreach coordinator. He also worked with Duke’s women’s team.
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Chris and couldn’t be more excited about him joining the Marquette family,” Wojciechowski said in a press release. “I have obviously had the chance to play and coach with him and have remained in constant contact and followed his career after his departure from Duke.
“Chris has a great understanding of the game of basketball and his personality will allow him to develop great relationships with our players,” Wojciechowski added. “We are going to focus on player skill development at Marquette and Chris’ coaching and playing experience make him a valuable addition to the staff and a vital piece to our on-court instruction.”
Carrawell was named the ACC Player of the Year in 2000 and was a first team All-American after averaging 16.9 points on 48 percent shooting, 6.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists for the ACC regular season and tournament champion Blue Devils. The overall No. 1 seed in the 2000 NCAA tournament, Duke lost to eventual Final Four participant Florida in the Sweet 16.
He’s tied for 30th on the all-time scoring list at Duke (1,455 points) and is tied for 8th with 116 overall wins. His 66 career ACC wins are second most by a Duke player.
Rivals’ Jeff Rabjohns noted that Carrawell was a standout high school player in St. Louis and has deep ties in that area, which certainly will help in recruiting.
“Duke lost to eventual Final Four participant Duke in the Sweet 16.”
Those split squad tourney games are a killer.
