Know Thy Enemy: Tennessee

Tennessee is a very similar team to Marquette. Both have first year coaches, both are in rebuilding seasons, and both are usually the shortest team on the floor. After losing four starters and two rotation players, the Volunteers have been left looking for an identity. Similar to Marquette, they run a four guard lineup with a 6-8 forward as their makeshift center. Despite this, Tennessee is not adept at hitting their three pointers. They have made 19 3s this season while only shooting .306 from beyond the arc. To put in perspective, Matt Carlino has 17 3s by himself this season. The key stat to know is tempo. You would expect a small like Tennessee to speed up the game but they currently rank 311th in adjusted tempo. So far this season, Marquette has looked very good against slow paced teams (Georgia Tech, Michigan State) and terrible against face paced teams (Omaha, NJIT). Tennessee likes to pressure on defense, but they also like to foul. They have had 6 players foul out in four games this season. A slow paced, less than average three point shooting team who is foul prone should be a great matchup for the Golden Eagles. The key player to stop is Josh Richardson. The 6-6 JR is the only returning starter from last season and has done everything in his power to become the go to go guy. He is averaging 17.5 ppg with 40% 3P shooting. He will be a tough guard from Marquette because he plays from the shooting guard position with a lot of great height. Expecting a very healthy dose of zone from Wojo.
