Every late Spring, I start obsessively refreshing Marquette’s Office of Finance reports page, looking for an update to the school’s 990 tax form, which private non-profit institutions have to file with the IRS. Although it updates with the previous fiscal year’s data (July to June), it is the only “true” source of hard data we will get from the school. So it’s a pretty big deal.
For the past 5 years, I’ve specifically used it to track coaching salaries around the Big East, as all schools, save UConn, have to file the 990 as well. So even though there may be other sources of income supplementing coaching pay, this is by far the most credible basis for comparison.
(For UConn, which is a publics institution without a 990, I’ve switched to using the publicly available data from Connecticut’s Open Payroll site. The totals for Dan Hurley differ a bit as that uses a calendar year rather than a fiscal year, so it won’t necessarily jive with reports in some instances, but it’s close enough and much easier to verify if you are interested in checking yourself.)
Usually, I just Tweet out an updated Excel screenshot and call it a day, like below.
But without much basketball content, and in the sake of appealing to a broader audience, I built a quick dashboard that will allow users to filter the data themselves by coach, school and year.

Marquette has paid Wojo more to not coach in 2022 and 2023 than all DePaul coaches combined the past 6 years
Using the public data, Marquette has paid former coach Steve Wojciechowski over $10 million in the 2022 and 2023 fiscal years as part of its buyout of his contract. In that same timespan, DePaul only combined to pay $8.22M to Dave Leitao and Tony Stubblefield.
That’s just wild to me.
Patrick Ewing got paaaaid
In the past 6 seasons, only Jay Wright made more than Patrick Ewing did to coach in the Big East at $21.6M.
The fact he made $9M more than Greg McDermott in that timespan still blows my mind.
