With 95% of the Big East season completed, it’s time to start thinking about seeding and matchups for the Big East Tournament.
And with just 5 games left, there are still a huge number of permutations left to decide who Marquette will play and when.
Seeding
Here are the official tiebreaker rules from the Big East for seeding purposes: https://www.bigeast.com/documents/2023/2/17/2023tiebreakers.pdf
And here’s a great reference to follow and track seeding probabilities.
For the No. 2 Seed:
1 WIN
If Marquette beats Xavier, and Creighton loses at Villanova, it will secure the 2 seed in the BET
0 WINS
If Marquette loses at Xavier, Creighton holds the top tiebreakers, so MU can not be the 2 seed with 2 losses.
For the No. 3 Seed:
1 WIN
If Marquette beats either Xavier, and Creighton beats Villanova, Marquette will secure the 3 seed in the BET
0 WINS
If Marquette loses to Xavier and Seton Hall loses to DePaul, MU will secure the 3 seed in the BET.
MU can also get the 3-seed without a win if Creighton loses to Villanova and Seton Hall beats DePaul. It would create a mini-conference grouping amongst those 3 and Creighton gets the 2 seed going 3-1 while Hall gets the 4 going 1-3.
For the No. 4 Seed:
0 WINS
If Marquette loses to Xavier, Creighton beats Villanova and Seton Hall beats DePaul, Marquette will fall to the 4 seed in the BET.
Matchups
There are still too many permutations remaining to gauge matchups, but here is a great resource where you can see the bracket, based on probabilities. So not final yet, just probably speaking.

Marquette could possibly still be matched with St. Joh’s, Villanova, DePaul, Providence, Xavier or Georgetown, depending on how it all shakes out. However, it is secured to not play until Thursday’s slate.
