Preseason Preview: Jackson State

Marquette Madness has come and gone. The season is so close, we can taste it. Marquette fans know who we will battle but might not know anything about our future opponents. To remedy this, Paint Touches is taking an in depth look at each of Marquette’s opponents, both conference and non-conference, to see what we have to look forward to. These will be released in order of what Paint Touches believes to be the easiest matchups to the toughest. The creamiest of cupcakes all the way to the most unbeatable of opponents. Next up is Marquette’s second squad of Tigers from the SWAC. Not Grambling but Jackson State.

Quick and Dirty Analysis: Jackson State is the best team on Marquette’s list of seven opponents who were ranked in the sub 300 last season. A .500 finisher in the lowly SWAC conference, the Tigers of Jackson State did not have a lot to be proud of. But the Tigers should be a lot more competitive (remember it’s a low bar) in 15-16. Coach Wayne Brent keeps all but one starter and brings in a large recruiting class. Their top signee in the 2015 class is a JUCO guard Chace Franklin. Franklin is a shoot first two guard who shot a whopping 58% from downtown. Coach Brent also managed to recruit Lindsey Hunter IV…yes, his dad is that Lindsey Hunter. The two time NBA champion’s son decided to play ball for his dad’s alma mater. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the younger Lindsey isn’t projected to be nearly as good as his father.

Size will be a huge issue for this team. With only two players taller than 6”7, both of whom were bench players last season, the Tigers will be forced to employ a lot of four guard lineups. Despite their small stature, Jackson State features only one sharpshooter on their roster and that is newcomer Chace Franklin. The best shooter from last year’s Tiger squad was Javeres Brent who shot a whopping 32% from three. Marquette should easily win the rebounding battle and abuse them in the post. The one thing to watch for is foul trouble for Luke and Henry. While they weren’t good at hitting free throws, Jackson State was one of the better teams at getting to the line.

Early Prediction: Marquette handles the Tigers easily. End up with a cushy 15-20 point victory.
