Deonte Burton’s Vincent Vinkings reached the final of the WHIZ KIDS Summer League taking out Sheboygan North in the quarterfinals and Rufus King in a sloppy semifinal.
Burton played a well rounded two games, but was never able to find his shot. He scored 10 in the quarterfinals on 5-7 shooting, adding 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Against Rufus King, Burton picked up three quick fouls and sat for over half the first half, finishing with 13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 blocks and 2 assists to go along with his 4 fouls and four turnovers.
Remember when I said Burton nearly finished a Dr. J-style lay-up last week, this is what it’s supposed to look like.
In case you were wondering, he can dunk too. Duh.
Burton’s only made long jumper on the night. He’s got a nice looking pull up.
His shot may not have been falling but Deonte was fantatic as a distributor. I counted seven assists on the night but there were five or six times when his passes led to teammates getting fouled on lay-up attempts. In particular there was one sequence that had my mouth agape. Burton had received a 3/4 court pass and while he was still airborne, threw a perfect, no-look, behind-the-back pass to a streaking teammate. It was as ridiculous in person as it looks on paper. Sadly, I did not grab video of that. Here is different highlight showcasing his vision and precision as an assist man.
Finally, Burton is going to make his living at the free throw line at the next level. He was fouled eight times, by my count, in the semifinal game, reaching the line 10 times. While there, though, he only hit five. This is one area of his game that if improved upon, will make him a much more lethal player.
